What?  General Information About Us

Our members consist of people from many backgrounds including but not limited to:
nurse, coach, construction, sales, self employed, teachers, student and every walk of life.

We have guest speakers once a month

Book reviews

travel to ADHD events and seminars

It is a large group yet a small weekly attendence so sharing can be personal and varied or as an annonomous observer.

It is a FREE SELF SUPPORTING organization.  A group of friendly helpful understanding people who are there to listen, share and learn as we all make the journey in life more enjoyable and easier!

Founded in January 2004 we have approximately 200 registered members and 60 regular attendees.

Our Mission at DuPage County, Western Suburbs of Chicago, Adult Attention Deficit Disorder ADD Support Group is to: 

¸       Create an atmosphere of honesty, trust, and confidentiality where AD/HD adults can know we are not alone.

¸       Provide education and information about Attention Deficit Disorder.

¸       Learn strategies to better manage our ADHD filled lives.

¸       Give one another emotional and spiritual support.

In Life:

ADD'ers we have spent our lives feeling blamed, criticized and misunderstood. Therefore, support, encouragement, acceptance, and understanding are essential to recover from the affects of AD/HD.

In our Dupage County Western Suburbs of Chicago Support Group:

1.     We have an opportunity to tell our story to fellow ADD'ers who witness and empathize with our past and current struggles.

2.     We encourage one another by sharing our struggles with ADHD, acknowledging gains and understanding losses.

3.     We hold each others' vision by reminding us of our goals and encouraging us to continue reaching for them.

4.     We clear the way for change by allowing us to vent and complain so we can move ahead.

5.     We provide a structure of meeting regularly, allowing us to consistently report our progress and setbacks.

6.     We give one another feedback and support telling us what they see us doing.

Typical Naperville ADHD meeting format:

  • Introduction and Announcements
  • ADHD Topic- Speaker or Educational
  • Break into small groups for discussion
  • Return to big group for closing
  • Adjourn to Max & Erma's

Individuals from Naperville, Lisle, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Bolingbrook, Darien, West Chicago, Oswego, Carol Stream, Wheaton, Aurora, Downers Grove, St. Charles, Batavia, Westchester, Itasca, Hinsdale, La Grange, Bartlett, Burr Ridge, Elgin, Western Springs meet every Tuesday at 7:00 pm. The first Tuesday of each month is considered an "open" meeting where non-AD/HD adult family, friends, and ADD professionals are invited to attend.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF AD/HD

It's important to recognize the areas where you struggle, but NOT to shame and blame yourself for them. Admit them. Take responsibility for them. But let go of thinking you have to be great at everything. Let you be you. Put the number 0-5 after the symptom as it applies to you 0 = doesn't apply, 5 = completely applies

1.    _   I fail to give close attention to details.

2.    _   I often make careless mistakes.

3.    _   I have difficulty sustaining attention and am easily distracted.

4.    _   I often hear others ask if I am listening.

5.    _   I struggle to follow through on ideas and projects.

6.    _   I am known to be forgetful; often called spacey or absentminded.

7.    _   I have a habit of misplacing and losing things.

8.    _   I have trouble managing time, appointments, projects, and day timers.

9.    _   I am impulsive.

10.  _   I have trouble with repetitious routines and details.

11.  _   I am often restless, edgy and full of nervous energy.

12.  _   My thoughts often race and bounce.

13.  _   I have a sense of under-achievement, feeling I fail to live up to my potential.

14.  _   I consider myself to be lazy or have been told I am lazy.

15.  _   I procrastinate, finding it difficult to get motivated to start or return to tasks.

16.  _   I do not like boredom and am always looking for ways out of boring things.

17.  _   I am organizationally challenged.

18.  _   I worry a great deal and get locked on negative thoughts.

19.  _   I have many projects going simultaneously and rarely finish any of them.

20.  _   I often feel I am a loner, with no close friends or people who understand me.

21.  _   I tend to say whatever comes to mind, not considering the consequences.

22.  _   I am impatient, often interrupt others to finish their statement or question.

23.  _   I have deep felt emotions with periods of anxiety, depression or loneliness.

24.  _   I often am a poor observer of myself, often unaware of my effect on others.

25.  _   Impulsive emotional outbursts have caused me trouble in relationships.

Write them on a separate piece of paper. Keep this in a place and refer to it often. Read it to yourself in the mirror. Give yourself credit for what you do well.
